It is a rubber seal that goes between the intake manifold and timing cover. It is a tad small to be pressed in alone. EDIT: Answered, thanks everybody!

Stamp out a rubber grommet from some rubber the same thickness, to place around that one, or check the connecting pipe if it fits in the end of that.

It's not that small. There is probably a 1/32 gap on all sides.

So how will the coolant pass between them?

Thats a critical gasket. It will leak on you if you do it wrong. A light coat of black silicone sealant on the the mating surfaces will help. I've seen those leak when people reuse it. Its a bitch to replace when everything is together.

Use a bit of grease or oil to stick it to its designated spot while you bolt up the timing cover. However, if it's too small, how is it supposed to seal properly? (I may not have this pictured correctly in my head)

That tells me nothing use the metric system.

Are you just asking how to keep it in place while you close things up? If so, would it mind being held in place with a little blob of grease?

Thanks! Do you think that permatex blue silicone sealant will work? The old gasket had cracks in it so I figured I should replace it, luckily the new one was in my gasket kit.

I was just wondering what kind of sealant I would have to use with the grommet. I'm wondering if Permatex blue RTV or something would work.

I was just wondering if I should put gasket maker around the outside of the gasket to ensure I get a good seal.

Yes just apply it (thin coat) to the mating surfaces and allow the silicone to tack up. Insert the oring and assemble the timing cover to it. The instructions on the permatex sealant will guide you. remember just a thin coat. It will help hold it in place and will take up any surface irregularities. Good Luck!

Thank you! This is my first time rebuilding an engine so everything is a learning experience.

They all have their little quirks. You'll feel great once it's together and you have the cam broken in.

You know, I know this is a joke post, but someone totally should invent double sided sealant tape.

You shouldn't need it, assuming it's pressed in tight by whatever it goes between. It's normally the flat side of a gasket that does the sealing, not the edge.
